-Modern day Heroes-
As a very young kid, I looked up to the heroes I read in books, watched on television and heard on the radio. Spider-man, Superman and Batman; all heroes that great artists and thinkers have molded to become a symbol of hope and strength. Didn't we all believe in heroes back then; that there was always someone to keep us safe from a burning building or from being mugged in a dark alleyway? I used to think that heroes needed superpowers or a cool costume with a cape, but as I realized in a day, heroes exist around me, but not how I expected. The first hero that caught my attention is a senior in my college; Anna Karina Jardin. What she did? Simple, she is the president of an organization that uses art as a medium to help preserve and promote hope for the young children of the Philippines. Without the hope of fame or fortune, she has continuously inspired the youth (including me) to make a change in a nation that needs the hope to make it a better place for the future generation. Aristikong Kabataan Philippines Inc. which was founded in Dec. 2010 has been proven to be one organization to be definitely taken notice for it's continuous help for the society. She is one of the junior ambassadors for Mondialogo and is noted for the "Peace Calender" and the "Peace Trees". One of these days, I do hope to get a chance to talk to a modern day hero and what makes it all worth it.
Another hero is one that the Philippines is definitely in dire need of. Sir Genesis Brillantes is a teacher under the College of International Relations in LPU. What makes this everyday professor a hero? It’s all because of his passion to produce even more modern day heroes for the nation and for the world. After being a professor in Political Economic Geography, I saw and felt the passion he had in being a professor. As a graduate from the University of the Philippines, it is very admirable that he instead preferred to help the youth in everything they needed both for a career and for life. He’s very much active in Facebook giving the very tech savvy students of today an easier medium to reach him. He shares thoughts with us that we can all relate to, which I think is an element that a professor needs in times of feeding the minds of his/her students. Education, the importance of this needs no introduction. For a nation or world to move forward, we need people to be ready in all aspects of society. After finishing the sem, Sir Gen made me want to be a professor even more, but of course after I fulfil my own dreams for myself, my loved ones, my nation and for HIM.
Why do we need heroes? Because it’s people like these who give us the hope we need to get through the day. It’s people like these that make dreams a very practical element in our lives. That even though the world seems dull and frightening at times, they provide us hope in what we should believe in and what we should fight for. No, superheroes running in tights or capes, flying around and shooting lasers don’t exist, but it’s people with dreams for making the world a better place that are the TRUE heroes.
